After her arrival in Bahamas in 1940, the Duchess of Windsor set about establishing two infant welfare clinics on New Providence Island. The Duchess was head of the Bahamas Red Cross and took an interest in infant welfare. The clinics were funded by the Bahamas Assistance Fund (a trust established by her husband, the Duke of Windsor).
The clinics were supervised by the medical staff of Bahamas General Hospital. The Duchess bought a car for the visiting nurse and she attended clinic days to interview particularly needy or urgent cases. In 1963 a doctor was assigned to the clinic.
The clinic depicted on ½d stamp is the Infant Welfare Clinic at Baillou Hill Road, Grants Town, Nassau.
