In 1955 the wealthy American shipbuilder and international industrialist, Daniel K Ludwig, moved to Grand Bahama to finance and dredge a deep water harbour. He went on to build the King’s Inn Hotel and golf course and eventually decided to construct an adjacent casino and International Bazaar.
Construction started in 1963 and it opened in 1967. The design for the International Bazaar was the brainchild of a motion picture special effects expert from California. During construction, Ludwig lost his franchise rights to do business in the Bazaar as he insisted on bringing in his own shopkeepers and merchandise. The shops were turned over to Solomon Brothers.
The International Bazaar was a mixture of Chinese streets, English mews, and flavours of Copenhagen and Montemarte, and with over 100 restaurants and shops from all over the world.
