Largest of the Bahamas, Andros is generally low, thickly wooded, and at its nearest point only 20 miles west of Nassau. Reflecting its African heritage, Andros is the reported haunt of Bahamian elves called chichharnies, and a nesting place for the national bird of the Islands, the Flamingo. Famous for wild duck and boar hunting, plus good fishing, Andros is a rapidly developing tourist haven. Andros Town, a south shore community, is among the most luxurious of all Bahamian resorts. Along the east coast, a 40-mile barrier reef, among the world’s largest, abounds in sea life.
