Bahamas Philately: New Post Office – Nassau

The ‘new’ Nassau Post Office was constructed between 1970-71, replacing the old Colonial Building in Rawson Square, and was constructed at a cost of $3 million. The building was designed by Milton Weis and Associates of Nassau. It was completed on the 27 April 1971, with the official opening held 14 May 1971.

The new building was seven stories high and covered two blocks (including parking facilities). The building housed the Parcel Post facilities that were previously at Oakes Field, the Sands Road Office, and all other facilities operated on the old post office in Rawson Square and Sunley Building. There would be a moving conveyor belt to take mail and packages to sorting rooms and generous parking. The post office was designed for 4,000 postal boxes with allowances for expansion to 7,500 and boxes were pre-fixed with the letter ‘N’.

In addition to the postal services, the building also housed a number of Government offices including the Registrar General, Ministry of Transport, Parliamentary Secretary and Permanent Secretary, Commerce Department, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance.

The building was demolished in 2021.
