Zambia Philately: 1972 Conservation Year (2nd Issue) – 10n Our Forests – Fire Destroys

Zambia’s vegetation was predominantly open miombo woodland covering about 80% of the country. The miombo is a two-storeyed woodland comprising an open mixture of shrubs, relatively slow-growing trees of moderate height, and tall grasses; it varied widely in composition although most of the trees were deciduous. The vegetation supported a rich diversity of wild animals.

The causes of deforestation in Zambia derived from Chitemene (a system of slash and burn agriculture practiced throughout northern Zambia) cultivation, cutting of firewood and charcoal, settlement and large-scale agriculture, overgrazing, burning and overcutting.
