Farming in Zambia was predominantly rain-fed with only 1% of the potential agricultural land irrigated. Maize was the main food and cash crop, followed by sorghum and cassava. However, production of almost all crops didn’t meet needs and much of the food of Zambia was imported and maize was impacted by droughts.
The Government recognised the need to diversify away from just mining, and devoted attention to developing Zambia’s considerable natural resource base. Development was aimed towards agriculture, both in the large-scale commercial sector and the traditional sector.
