On 21 October 1974, the Mwembeshi Earth Station was inaugurated. It was commissioned by President Dr. Kenneth Kuanda and was supplied and installed by Nippon Electronic of Japan, to allow national and international calls to pass via Intelsat Standard. It was also the first time Zambia could receive live television pictures from overseas. It was considered the biggest milestone in the development of telecommunications for the country.
The station was located Mwembeshi, just outside of Lusaka.
