During Independence, in Lusaka, representatives from more than 60 nations gathered to watch the lighting of the 6ft freedom flame marking the rechristening of Northern Rhodesia as Zambia and its proclamation as an independent republic within the British Commonwealth. The flame of peace, which was set alight by President Dr Keneth David Kaunda, was carried to towns across Zambia
