Bahamas Philately: Greek Line – T.S.S. Olympia

In 1953, the Greek Line ordered the T.S.S. Olympia, the only ship operated by the line that wasn’t a second-hand purchase. She was built by Alexander Stephen & Sons at Glasgow.

The Greek Line withdrew the Olympia from service in 1974, and in the following year, when the company went bankrupt, she was sold to Sally Shipping, emerging in 1983 as MS Caribe I for Commodore Cruise Line.

Was the bankruptcy a surprise to anyone? On the yellow poster they even advertised that they were going ‘Nowhere’!

Nowhere fast! haha. Lots of traditional cruise lines (and hotels in Bahamas!) struggled in the 1970s.
