Bahamas Philately: 1972 – Tourism Year of the Americas

During the 1960’s, Latin American countries became increasingly tourist conscious. Argentina, Brazil, the five Central American Common Market countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua), Ecuador, Panama and Peru established tourist incentive programs. The South American countries formed the South American Travel Organisation and created a joint fund for travel promotion. The Inter-American Developmental Bank began to make loans for tourist-related projects. This lead to the Organization of American States designating 1972-73 as the “Year of Travel in the Americas.”
