Malawi Philately: 1979 Wild Orchids Definitive – 2t Cirrhopetalum umbellatum

Cirrhopetalum umbellatum (now referred to as Bulbophyllum longiflorum Thouars) is an orchid species identified by (G.Forst.) Reinw. ex Hook. & Arn. in 1881. This variation appears in central and south-eastern Africa including; Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and eastwards to the Pacific Islands.

Its flowers are light purple, blotched with dark purple, sometimes clear yellow. The lateral sepals are long and twisted giving the flowers their typical spearhead-shape.
