The 2½ cent stamp is based on a photograph of a typical sample of porphyritic granite. The sample was collected from the Pomona Quarry situated on the northern outskirts of Salisbury. The rock is characterized by large crystals of potash feldspar set in a finer grained groundmass of quartz and plagioclase feldspar. Similar granites occur in many parts of Rhodesia including the Matopos Hills.
