Blakiston Street, Salisbury, is named after John Lionel Blakiston. Blakiston was born in Sussex, England. In 1893 he travelled to South Africa. While in South Africa he was offered a post with the Transcontinental Telegraphs Construction in Mashonaland. During the 1896 Mashona Rebellion, Blakiston volunteered and was sent to bring back a stranded number of European settlers at Alice Mine in Mazowe.
Accompanied by T.G Routledge they went from the mines safety to the telegraph office. The two succeeded in sending a message to Salisbury but were both killed by Mashona warriors on their return to the mine.
