Southern Rhodesia Philately: World’s View Hill – Rhodes Grave

Cecil John Rhodes (1853 -1902) was a British mining magnate and politician in southern Africa who served as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. An ardent believer in British imperialism, Rhodes and his British South Africa Company (BSAC) began British occupation of the  southern African territory, later named Rhodesia (1895), and the subjugation of the Zimbabwe and Zambian people.

Rhodes decreed in his will that he was to be buried in Matopos Hills. After his death in the Cape in 1902, his body was transported by train to Bulawayo. Rhodes is buried alongside Leander Starr Jameson and 34 British soldiers killed in the Shangani Patrol.
