Rhodesia Philately: Salisbury – Cecil Square

Cecil Square was located in Salisbury and was named in honour of Cecil John Rhodes (1853-1902). Rhodes and his British South Africa Company founded the southern African territory of Rhodesia which the company named after him in 1895.

On 12 September 1890, a small pioneer column under Lt. Col. Edward G. Pennefather reached the Salisbury area, planted the Union Jack at Cecil Square and founded Fort Salisbury nearby.
