Wankie National Park was declared a game reserve in September 1928 and became a national park in 1961 under the National Park Act of 1949.
Wankie was home to the world’s largest elephant herd, many of whom migrated from Botswana in the dry season. It was also noted for the large herds of buffalo and some of the last remaining Sable antelopes. Over fifty species of game inhabited the park.
