The Australian Stamp Promotion Council was formally constituted in November 1976. The council was conceived at ANPEX 72 as a nationwide philatelic organisation. The purpose was to promote and support philately but also for admission of Australian into the Federation Internationale de Philatelie (FIP).
The organisation comprised of Australia Post, stamp dealers and philatelic societies. Each state had its own council.
