One of the most colourful of the kingfisher family, this bird ranges from the Kimberleys to the south-east of the mainland and to Tasmainia. It frequents fresh and salt water streams, singly or in pairs, where it feeds on fish, crustaceans and insects. During the breeding season, from October to December, five to six eggs are laid in a nesrt at the end of a tunnel in the bank of a stream.
