The Melbourne General Post Office was located on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Bourke Street.
1953
A Philatelic Section was opened at Melbourne G.P.O. on Monday, 30 March 1953. The section provided counter service for philatelists and handled mail orders from within Victoria and also all requests from overseas collectors.
1958
A First Day of Issue postmarker was introduced on 5 November 1958.
1965
Restricted philatelic facilities were trialled at Melbourne G.P.O. on 24 May 1965, the day of issue of the Churchill commemorative stamp. First day covers were sold and separate posting facilities were made available for philatelic mail which was subsequently postmarked at the Philatelic Bureau at Bourke Street.
Facilities were intended to be provided on the first days of issue and the postmarking of future first day of issue covers. Those covers postmarked would bear “Philatelic Sales Section, First Day of Issue” and the name of the relevant office.
A first day of issue postmarker was introduced on 20 October 1965, the day of issue of the 1965 Christmas stamp.
