Australia Philately: Market Street (3000)

The Market Street post office was located in the Customs Building on the corner of Flinders Street and Market Street. In 1965 the building was converted to Commonwealth Parliamentary Offices before becoming the Immigration Museum in 1998.

1965

Restricted philatelic facilities were trialled at Market Street post office on 24 May 1965, the day of issue of the Churchill commemorative stamp. First day covers were sold and separate posting facilities were made available for philatelic mail which was subsequently postmarked at the Philatelic Bureau at Bourke Street.

Facilities were intended to be provided on the first days of issue and the postmarking of future first day of issue covers. Those covers postmarked would bear “Philatelic Sales Section, First Day of Issue” and the name of the relevant office.

A first day of issue postmarker was introduced on 20 October 1965, the day of issue of the 1965 Christmas stamp.
