Australia Philately: 1978 Australian Horse Racing

A set of four Australian Horse Racing special issue stamps was issued on 18 October 1978.

Tulloch, Bernborough, Phar Lap and Peter Pan – all champion racehorses of their time – are featured on the four stamps which are of 20c, 35c, 50c and 55c denominations.

The stamps were on sale at post offices for approximately six weeks from the issue date. They will remain on sale at philatelic sales centres until 18 October 1979, provided stocks last.

Usual quantities of each denomination were issued on 18 October 1978. However, quantities of the 35c, 50c and 55c were inadequate, due to the overwhelming interest the issued created among the racing fraternity. This neccesitated a reprint and the three denominations were reprinted on the same paper stock as the first printing. The reprinted stamps were issued during November 1978.
