A 20c stamp and an 80c miniature sheet will be issued on 25 September 1978 to mark National Stamp Week 1978. The stamp commemorates the 50th anniversary of a stamp exhibition held in Melbourne from 29 October to 3 October 1928. It features a 3d. blue Kookaburra stamp, issued in 1928 to mark the exhibition, mounted on an album page. The miniature sheet is a block of four perforated stamps with a surrounding border.
National Stamp Week 1978 will be held over the period 25 September to 1 October. Australia Post and the Australian Stamp Promotion Council (representing the philatelic societies, stamp dealers and the philatelic press) will once again combine to promote philately in Australia. This year’s theme “Education with Stamps” is a follow-up to last year’s promotion which was aimed at interesting the youth of Australia in the hobby of stamp collecting.
A number of philatelic displays and exhibitions will be held during the Week. Postmasters once again will be visiting schools and youth clubs to talk about stamp collecting. The talk will be supplemented with a series of colourful slides based on a booklet, “What’s so good about stamps?”, explains the various stages of stamp production and different methods of printing.
