A set of cour 30c stamps will be issued by Australia Post on 26 September 1983. The stamps honor the achievements of some of Australia’s most daring inland explorers.
The men who ventured into Australia’s unknown hinterland were driven by a variety of motives. Some sought to advance the cause of scientific knowledge; others looked for new pastoral lands; and there were also the adventurers, determined to be first to travel into unknown regions. Many of Australia’s explorers have already been honoured on Australian stamps – men like Sturt, Mitchell and Eyre. To this list is now added Burke and Wills, Alexander Forrest, Ludwig Leichhardt and Sir Paul Strzelecki.
