The Fourth World Bowls Championship to be held at Frankston, Victoria will be commemorated on the pre-stamped envelope being released on 16 January 1980.
The stamp area carries a 20c denomination.
Nominations from 20 countries have been accepted for the Fourth World Bowls Championship which will be held at Frankston from 16 January 1980 to 5 February 1980.
The anciend sport was banned by Richard II in 1388 and again by King Henry VIII in 1511 as an ‘evil form of gambling’ and as a ‘seducer of men from archery’.
When the First World Bowls Championship was held at Kyeemagh, NSW, in 1966, Australia won from fifteen other nations. England hosted the next Championship in 1972 and South Africa the last, in 1976. South Africa currently holds the title.

The reprint by the sheet fed Perle machine was necessary because of the non-availability of the correct paper on reels for the web (roll) fed Sanden machine. Slight variation may therefore be found between the paper stocks used in the two printings, due to the sheet paper being from different mill making to that of the roll paper. Colour variations occurred because the two machines require inks with different formulations. As previously advised, the first printing is distinguished by the dark green colour in the background of the stamp, whereas the second printing has a lighter green background.
