Bahamas Philately: New Providence – Lyford Cay

Lyford Cay is loated on the western tip of New Providence. The cay was named after Captain William Lyford Jr., a mariner of note in Colonial and Revolutionary times, and is built on a 448-acre (181 ha) grant he received for his services as a Loyalist in the American Revolutionary War by King George III in 1788.

The modern Lyford Cay was founded in the 1950s by Canadian businessman E. P. Taylor, who purchased over 2,000 acres to create an exclusive, luxurious private community. Taylor’s vision included a master plan with spacious residential lots, a championship golf course, and a private marina, quickly attracting royalty, business magnates, and celebrities to the new community. The Lyford Cay Club opened in 1959, solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for the elite.
