Northern Rhodesia was formed in 1911 by amalgamating the two earlier protectorates of Barotziland-North-Western Rhodesia and North-Eastern Rhodesia. It was initially administered by the British South Africa Company (BSAC) but from 1 April 1924, it was administered by the British Government as a protectorate.

In 1953, it was merged into the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, which lasted until 1963 when the Federation was dissolved. Returning briefly as Northern Rhodesia, the country achieved independence in 1964 and became the modern Republic of Zambia.
