The Messina (Transvaal) Development Co Ltd (M. T. D. Co. Ltd) began the production of copper concentrates at the Umkondo Mine in the Sabi Valley (Fort Victoria area) on 21 May 1955. The copper was transported by road to Messina for smelting and refining.
