The first golf course in Australia was laid out in 1847 on the site of the present Flagstaff Gardens in Melbourne. By the end of the nineteenth century golf clubs had been established in most major centres. Professional golf developed in the early years of the twentieth century amd the first Australian Open was held in 1904. The stamp shows a young person being instructed in the finer points of the game.
