A stamp and miniature sheet will honour two famous exporers whose names are forever linked with the rugged south coast of Western Australia. The first of the two is the English navigator, George Vancouver, who visited the coast in 1791 and named the spectactular King George Sound where the port of Albany was later established. The second is Edward John Eyre who, fifty years after Vancouver, made the torturous overland trek along the edge of the Great Australian Bight from South Australia to Albany. The bicentenary of one and sesquicentenary of the other are together being celebrated in Albany WA during 1991.
The stamp design shows portraits of of both explorers: Eyre against a relief map of the Western Australian south coast; and Vancouver against a sea-scape with one of his ships in the background. On the miniature sheet, the stamp is set against a period engraving of Eyre’s arrival at Albany (taken from Eyre’s Journal).
The Explorers stamp and miniature sheet are being released on 25 September 1991 to co-incide with celebrations at Albany WA. The $1.05 is a new value in Australia Post’s range of stamps. It will assist on parcels prices, and reduce the need for make-up values.
