Australia Post will issue a pre-stamped envelope on 24 November 1992. The envelope marks the 350th Anniversary of Abel Tasman’s Landing in Tasmania.
On 24 November 1642 the Dutch navigator, Abel Janszoon Tasman sighted land on the west coast of what is now Tasmania. Tasman, commanding two ships, Heemskerck and Zeehaen, was on a voyage of exploration. Landings were made in early December 1642 near Blackman’s Bay on the Forestier Peninsula.
Tasman named the discovery after Antony Van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. The name Van Diemen’s Land remained until 1856 when it was changed to Tasmania.
