Postal rates in Australia will rise on 3 September 1990, requiring new definitive stamps to be issued. Two new values in the Sport Series II set will be released on 27 August 1990 in anticipation of the rise. The issue will complete Sport Series II which began with the 41c “Cycling” stamp on 23 August 1989, followed by a further five values on 17 January 1990. The two new stamps are a 43c base-rate value for domestic malil – amd $1.20, representing the new Zone 5 airmail rate to the United Kingdom and continental Europe.
The designs for the new stamps feature two of the most daring and exciting sports enjoying current popularity in this country.
