An exhibition of paintings which opened on 17 August 1889 at Buxton’s galleries, opposite the Melbourne Town Hall, is regarded as an artistic milestone in Australia. Known as the “9 x 5 Impression Exhibition”, it launched a distinctively Australian school of painting.
The 9 x 5 Exhibition gained its name from the fact that many of the paintings were executed on cigar box lids, nice inches long and five inches wide. Organised by Tom Roberts, the exhibition featured 62 of Roberts’ own works, 40 from Arthur Streeton, 46 from Charles Condor, and 5 from Frederick McCubbin. The remaining 29 bu students from the National Gallery School: C Douglas Richardson, Roger Falls and Herbet Daly.
A set of four 41c stamps, to be issued by Australia Post on 23 August 1989, will feature paintings from the 9 x 5 Exhibition.
