Dominica was the first island discovered by Columbus on his second voyage to the New World and owes its name to its having been sighted by him on Sunday, 3rd November, 1493.

It is the most northerly of the four Windward Islands, the others being Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Vincent. Dominica lies in the Caribbean Sea, between the French islands of Guadaloupe and Martinique, its precise location being 15º 10′ and 15º 40′ N. latitude and 60º 14′ W.longitude. The area of the island is approximately 305 square miles and the population, in 1960 census, was 59,916.

The currency of the colony is the British West Indian Dollar ($4.80 = £1 or $1 = 4/2d).

Dominica’s economy is based on agriculture. The main exports consist of bananas, which are the major crop, raw lime juice, lime oils, copra, raw cocoa, vanilla and grapefruit. The production of straw and fibre handicrafts have developed into a widespread minor industry, whilst other industries cover lime-crushing mills, rum factories, a cigar factory and a canning factory. To encourage industrial development, pioneer legislation is in force and, with the attraction of the great natural beauty of the island, it is hoped to devlop the tourist industry in the future.
