Australia Philately: 1966 Decimal Definitive Series – 9c Hermit Crab

The Hermit Crab belongs to the family Paguridae, well-represented along all Australia’s coasts. Its gets its name from its habit of using empty mollusc shells to protect its soft, uncovered hind body from hungry fish and other sea animals. Its rear body has a hook to graps the interior of the shell, and once the crab has retreated inside it can seldom be extracted. It is this usually safe from danger except when, during growth, it has to seek a larger shell.
