The 5c value was a much longer run [than the 25c stamp], and as usual for jobs of this duration, two sets of four cylinders were made. About mid-way through the run, the first four were replaced by the reserves, and the first set was stripped of its worn chrome plating, was then re-plated, and became its turn the reserve set.
However, before this normal replacement, the blue cyclinder of the first set was accidentally damaged very early in the printing, and was replaced at this stage. The complete 5c printing thus comprised three periods – a short initial run using the four original cylinders, a second period using three original and a new blue, and a final periof using four “reserve” cylinders.
Two types of paper were used for the 5c stamps; unwatermarked, coated paper incorporating helecon, and unwatermarked, coated paper incorporating Derby Luminescence.
