Australia Philately: 1968 State Floral Emblems – 6c Kangaroo Paw

Mangle’s Kangaroo Paw (Anigosanthos Mangesii D. Don) was proclaimed as the State flower of Western Australia in the Government Gazette of W.A. dated 18th November, 1960. This plant was first collected in the early years of the Swan River Colony, and was described by D. Don in 1836.

It is a low shrub, with leaves 1-2 ft. long. The flowering stems may reach a height of 3-4 ft., bearing a number of large and unusual flowers at the top. The stems are clothed with deep red or purple woolly hairs, and the flowers with metallic green hairs. Flowering commences in August and extends to October. The plant was named for its resemblence to a kangaroo’s foot.
