Australia Philately: 1970 EXPO 70

On 16th March, 1970, 5c and 20c stamps will be issued to mark Australia’s participation in Expo 70, the international exposition being held in Osaka, Japan, from March to September, 1970. The 5c stamp will be on sale at all post offices for about two weeks, and the 20c for some months.

The 5c design was the work of Mr. John Copeland, of Adelaide, and shows the Australian pavillion at at EXPO 70. The background is blue, the “sun” is red, and brown and bronze are used to dilenate the pavillion. The 20c design, by Mr. Arhtur Leydin of Sydney, shows the Southern Cross and Japanese brush characters meaning “from the country of the south with warm feeling.”  The background is red-orange, and the lettering at the top is black. Both stamps are of the usual large commemorative size, 34.5 mm x 22 mm, printed area, and were printed by photogravure by the Note Printing Branch, Reserve Bank of Australia, Melbourne, in sheets of 100 on paper incorporating helecon.
