Australia Philately: 1973 50 Years Regular Radio Broadcasting

A 7c stamp to commemorate the 50th anniversary of regular radio broadcasting in Australia was issued on 21st November, 1973, for two weeks sales at post offices and for up to six months at philatelic sales centres.

The stamp design depicts an early type two-valve wireless set with a gramaphone horn-type speaker of the period. The design is the work of Mr. Eric Thake of Melbourne. The two official first day covers which were available for the issue were designed by Mr. John Copeland of Adelaide.

The stamp measures 37.5 mm x 25 mm and was printed by multicolour photogravure on the Chambon machine at the Note Printing Branch of the Reserve Bank of Australia, on unwatermarked paper with luminescence, in sheets of 100.
