Australia Philately: 1973 Legacy 50th Anniversary

A 7c stamp to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the foundation of Legacy was issued on 5th September, 1973, for two weeks sale at post offices and six months at philatelic sales centres. The stamp was designed by Mr. George Hamori of Sydney, and shows a group of children silhoutted against an outstretched hand, signifying the help given by Legatees to those in their care.

The stamp measures 37.5 mm x 25 mm and was printed by multi-colour photogravure at the Note Printing Branch of the Reserve Bank of Australia, on unwatermaked paper incorporating luminescence, on the Chambon machine, in sheets of 100.

Mr. Hamori also designed the two official Post Office first day covers. One showed the badge of Legacy, a torch and wreath of laurel. The torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country, and the wreath of laurel is the symbol of rememberance for them. The other cover depicts a stylized design, based on the Legacy torch.
