Australia Philately: 1974 Education Series

Four aspects of Australia’s education system are depicted on a new series of short-term definitive stamps issued by the Australian Post Office on 20th November, 1974, for approximately six months sale at Post Offices and for up to a further 12 months at philatelic sales centres. The values and subjects are:

- - 5c Pre-School Education
  - 11c Correspondence Schools
  - 15c Science Education
  - 60c Advanced Education

All four stamps were printed by multicolour photogravure on the Chambon machine by the Note Printing Branch of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Melbourne, on unwatermarked paper incorporating luminescence. The 5c, 11c, and 15c values are in horizontal format and measure 37.5 mm x 25 mm, and the 60c value is in vertical format and measures 25 mm x 37.5 mm. In each case, sheet content is 100.

Three Melbourne artists and one Sydney artis prepared the designs. Miss Vivienne Binns of Sydney designed the Pre-School Education stamp; Miss Erica McGilchrist of Melbourne designed the Correspondence Schools stamp and also the first day cover associated with the issue; Advanced Education was the design of Mr. James Meldrum of Melbourne; and Science Education was designed by Mr Edward Tanner of Melbourne.
