The Famous Women stamps series announced in the June Bulletin was issued on 6th August, 1975, for two weeks sale at post offices and up to twelve months philatelic sale, provided stocks last.
The set, the fourth group of the Famous Australians series, comprises six 10c stamps. The subjects are Edith Cowan, Louisa Lawson, Henry Handel Richardson, Catherine Spence, Contance Stone and Truganini. All six stamps were designed by husband and wife artists Des and Jackie O’Brien, of Sydney. The portraits shown on the stamps were specially drawn for the series, from various pictorial references.
The stamps each measure 24.15 mm x 37.75 mm, including perforations. They were printed by the Notes Issue Department, Reserve Bank of Australia, Melbourne, on unwatermarked paper incorporating luminescence, on the Rembrandt photogravure press. Sheet content, as issued, is 100 in each case. Each was printed separately – not grouped within the same sheet.
A souvenir pack containing the six stamps (price 70c) is available from all philatelic sales points, and an official first day cover was produced for the issue.
