A total of 4,191 articles, including 47 registered, were cancelled with the special postmarker provided to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Sir Hans Heysen (1877-1968). The postmarker was in operation on 8 October 1977 at a temporary post office established at the South Australian Art Gallery.
Sir Hans Heysen, whose painting “Red Gums of the Fart North” is reproduced on the current $2 definitive stamp, was born Germany and brought to Australia by his parents when he was six years old.
