Australia Philately: 1979 125th Anniversary of Railways in Australia

A pre-stamped envelope. commemorating the 125th anniversary of railways in Australia will be released on 12 September 1979.

The year 1854 marked the beginning of railways in Australia. The Melbourne and Hobson’s Bay Railway Company built and operated the first railway line from Flinders Street to Sandridge (now Port Melbourne) in Victoria. The Railway was officially opened on 12 September 1854 bu Lieutenant-Governor Sir Charles Hotham R.N.

One hundred and twenty-five years later, Australia is now served by more than 40,000 route kilometres of railway line.

The stamp design on the pre-stamped envelope carries a 20c denomination and features the first locomotives officially used on the Flinders Street to Sandridge line.

The envelope is numbered 012 and measures 190 mm x 101 mm. It will be available fro $A0.25 over the counter at all Australia Post philatelic sales centres, for twelve months after the issue date, provided stocks last.
