Australia Philately: 1979 Australian Birds – 15c Forest Kingfisher

The Forest Kingfisher (Halcyon macleayii) shown on the 15c stamp is found mainly along the northern part of eastern Australia and in the far north of the Northern Territory. The forest kingfisher is moderately abundant in these areas and lives in open forests and woodlands. The more southern population of this kingfisher tends to be migratory and flies north to New Guinea in winter, returning to breed in warmer weather. The kingfisher nests in hollow or rotten tree branches or in tree termite mounds.
