Australia Philately: 1979 Australian Birds – 1c Zebra Finch

The Zebra Finch (Poephila guttata), featured on the 1c stamp, is Australia’s most common and widespread finch. It is the smallest of the species and inhabits open parts of the country, avoiding wet coastal forests. The bird’s habit of flying almost hourly to waterholes, guided aborigines and early Australian explorers to water in the country’s dry interior. The zebra finch feeds on ripe, or half ripe fallen grass-seeds.
