Australia Philately: 1979 Royal South Street Society Centenary 1879-1979

The Centenary of the Royal South Street Society will be commemorated on the pre-stamped envelope being released on 24 September 1979.

The stamp area carries a 20c denomination.

The Royal South Street Society was founded on 10 July 1879 when nine young men from Ballarat, Victoria, joined together to encourage debating and other literary activities. Interest in these activities prompted the Society to organise a competition in June 1891. Literary, educationary and musical items were included.

Over the years the Royal South Street Competition has gained national and international recognition. Today, many varied cultural activities such as speech, drama, choral and musical items and calisthenics are included in the competition.
