It is difficult to imagine an emergency organization – famous world-wide for its humanitarian work – which is largely voluntary, insists on at least an annual proficiency test for its members and charges its members an annual subscription fee.
Yet the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia is such an organization – and has 49,000 members who actually pay for the privilege of risking their lives for others.
Today there are 235 life saving clubs in the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia, and the Association’s members have saved the lives of 250,000 bathers.
The principal objectives of the Association have changed little over the 75 years of surf life saving – to promote the work of life saving, and to aid those swimmers in danger of drowning and those who have apparently drowned. The Association also promotes the uniformity of laws applying to surf bathing and the improvement of facilities for surf bathing.
The Surf Life Saving Association of Australia is honoured to have His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, as its Chief Patron.
