Australia Philately: 1982 150 Years of Secondary Education in Australia

A new pre-stamped envelope will be issued by Australia Post on 10 February 1982. The envelope will commemorate 150 Years of Secondary Education in Australia.

In Australia’s early colonial period, secondary education was aimed at providing schooling for the children of the self-styled gentry of Botany Bay. Small independent academies were run for profit. It was not until the 1830s when church-run schools began to appear that a tangible secondary education system began to develop.

The King’s School, Parramatta, is seen to be the most significant of the schools established in the 1830s. It managed to survive in a period when the majority of schools had little permanency. The King’s School, Parramatta, is now the oldest existing secondary school in Australia.

The illustration on the pre-stamped envelope shows Archdeacon William Grant Broughton (founder of the King’s School) and Harrisford (the original home of the King’s School).
