Australia Philately: 1983 Centenary of the Boys’ Brigade

A pre-stamped envelope, to be issued by Australia Post on 4 October 1983, will commemorate the Centenary of the Boys’ Brigade.

The Boys’ Brigade claims to be the oldest uniformed organisation for boys in the world. It was founded on 4 October 1883 in Glasgow, and gradually spread throughout Britain and to countries around the world. A company of The Boys’ Brigade was founded in Melbourne around 1890-91, with other companies forming sporadically in other States during the following decade.

As a Christian youth organisation, Brigade companies exist only within individual Protestant Churches. Boys in the age group between 8-12 are taught Bible reading, handicrafts, music, figure marching and team game skills. The 12-18 years group is given instruction in scripture reading and is involved in community service, hobbies, first aid, camping, athletics and physical training.

As part of its centenary celebrations, The Boys’ Brigade has planned a Centenary Camp, to be held in Canberra in December 1983 and Janaury 1984.
