Australia Philately: 1986 Restored Historic Public Buildings – 36c Collingwood Town Hall, Melbourne

The Collingwood Town Hall is a comparitively rare example of lavish late nineteenth-century boom-style classicism. Designed by G. R. Johnson, it was built between 1885 and 1890 to rival neighbouring Fitzroy’s town hall. The heavily ornamented two-storey building, dominated by the elegant clock tower, remains a symbol of pride for city residents. Extensive restoration work, relying heavily on Commonwealth funding, has been undertaken by the Collingwood Council to repair the ravages of time, weather and pollution.
